Name status
In general the names are of three types:
- principal names (marked with the letter P)
- parallel names (marked with the equation sign '='), i.e. names that have been officially accorded the status of parallel names to be used in addition to principal names; with place names outside Estonia this official status is not always known; for short names of countries and organizations there are also full (official) titles given here as parallel names
- variant names (marked with the abbreviation
VAR), i.e. name forms from other sources, historical names, variants in other languages, erroneous names, etc.; always cross-referenced to principal name forms
Part of the records (principal, parallel and variant names) are marked with different status labels.
- historical records (abbreviated
HIST), i.e. names for features that no longer exist or the name has fallen out of usage for other reasons
- perspective records (abbreviated
PRSP), i.e. names for features that are not (yet) officially confirmed; usually such status will be granted to names for new streets in a preliminary stage; at the moment there are no such names in KNAB
- records with special status (abbreviated
REK), supposed, temporary name forms, etc.; in KNAB only the most highly questionable records (incl. disputed name records) are labelled with this status
- questionable records (abbreviated
Q)
