‣ Universaalne nimemall, mida kasutatakse ressursside leidmiseks ja kasutamiseks Interneti kaudu.
Näide:
▫ Näiteid URL-idest, mis identifitseerivad vastavalt Interneti-saidi, faili või teenuse:
„http://www.iso.ch„ on Rahvusvahelise Standardiorganisatsiooni ISO peakorteri sait. See sait asub Genfis, Šveitsis („ch„ on Šveitsi ISO maanimi).
„http://www.iso.ch/welcome.html„ on ISO saidi ingliskeelse kodulehe URL. Selle faili poole saab pöörduda protokolliga HTTP.
„news:loto„ võiks olla loto-nimelise foorumi URL.

Märkus:
▫See mall koosneb kahest osast: pöördusprotokolli nimest (näiteks http, ftp jne) ning ressursilokaatorist, mis võib koosneda saidinimest, teenimest ja failinimest. IP-põhise pöördumise korral on URL-i üldkuju:
pöördusviis://<kasutaja>:<parool>@<hostinimi>:<port>/<tee>/fail,
kus „hostinimi„ sisaldab täieliku domeeninime.

URL (synonym)

‣ A universal naming convention that is used for locating and accessing resources via the Internet.
Näide:
▫ Examples of URL identifying an Internet site, or a file, or a service:
„http://www.iso.ch„ is the URL of the site of the headquarters of the International Organization for Standardization „ISO„. This site is located in Geneva, Switzerland („ch„ is the ISO country name of Switzerland).
„http://www.iso.ch/welcome.html„ is the URL of the home page in English of the „ISO„ site. This file is accessible by the HTTP protocol.
„news:toto„ might be the URL of a forum whose name would be „toto„.
Märkus:
▫This convention consists of two parts: the access protocol, e.g., http, ftp, etc., and the resource locator which may consist of a site name, path or file name. In the case of IP-based access, the URL has the general form:
scheme://<user>:<password>@<host_name>:<port>/<path>/file
where „host_name„ includes a fully qualified domain name.
